The cover was probably the best bit about this book. The whole novel just fell a bit flat for me, the plot felt non existent, the characters are truly awful and the magic system is very confusing and not explained well. I had no idea how the familial magic system worked, except for the main characters Ophelia and her ability to read objects and this was very underutilised.
I kept waiting for something to happen and then it just ended, I realise this is the start of a series but it kind of ended out of nowhere.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to Netgalley, Europa Editions and the author.

I’ve finished book 1, and it was fine. All the elements are fun, the execution of them is not my style. I still have a ton of questions. Can’t believe that’s how it ended. There was no fulfillment from that ending at all. Looking forward to more of everything :/
The girl’s ability to travel through mirrors is so fascinating, and her ability to “read things” yet glosses over these abilities. I want to know the background, the ins and outs where she normally goes. There are maybe 2 events where she ends up reading with her ability. How does that work? Is it difficult, what influences how the reading goes? AND she’s clumsy? What’s that all about? Just an added quirk? I do think her scarf and glasses are charming. There are just a little too many quirks for one character to successfully pull off in a book. Also, intense eye rolls for how huge Thorn is. She keeps looking up and up and up. Idk I’m just sick of the trope. ALL of these men can’t be THAT tall. Come on.
