This is a really odd book. Fantasy is not a genre I naturally gravitate towards, and the world building at the beginning of this book nearly made me stop before the story got started.
I'm glad I stuck with it though, because it ended up being an intriguing tale of a young woman and young man who are forced to marry. I look forward to seeing how the cliffhanger of this book is resolved in the next.

When I first heard of this book and saw its cover, it just looked like a romance novel to me, but omg it was not!!!! This had everything I wanted: politics, incredible slow-burn (and I mean slow burn to the extent that they haven’t even held hands yet), angst and tension. It took me a little to be invested in it, since the world building was quite heavy and intense. I don’t know if this was just my perception, but it felt like nothing happened for the first 70%, but also so much happened. It was just a lot of information on the pole and its hierarchy, which was interesting to me. Definitely shouldn’t be read as a standalone.
This book felt like watching a Ghibli film. While at first it felt like nothing was happening, before I knew it, SO much occurred! It took a while to get into it but once things started to get real…. I read it relatively fast. The FMC was a bit annoying at first with how much she let people walk all over her but once Ophelia finally stood up for herself against Berenilde, I was incredibly excited. Happy she found an ally in Fox and Gail. I’m curious to see where the rest of this story will go.

It's taken some time to put together why the book felt off to me. I enjoyed it generally, but I picked it up based on the marketing copy "Howl's Moving Castle meets Pride and Prejudice". And I think they have their Byronic heroes mixed up, because this is much more "Howl's Moving Castle meets Jane Eyre". Again - it's an intriguing world and I'm enjoying the kind of whimsical kind of dark tone. But as a theoretical romance, it leaves a lot to be desired. I do think it would have helped if I wasn't sold a slightly different book.

This book was so boring. Nothing happened in over 400 pages. There was no tension even when the characters were in danger. It was a unique setting but the plot was lacking.
