This is a sequel and although I read it about six weeks after the first one, I didn't have any trouble picking up with Vivien, Susan, Merlin, and the other booksellers with their magical talents. It's fast-paced and quite the romp - I read it in two days - but the characters do flesh out a bit more than they did in the first book. Vivien takes her role as a right handed bookseller, and her brother's minder, quite seriously. Merlin for all of his many talents does require nearly all of the advice and minding his sister is ready to deal out. As I read, I became more entranced with the magic system and the time frame and less interested in Susan and her frequent asides as to how she just wants to be a normal art student. I was glad the ending set up the characters and their future adventures as it did. I am looking forward to the next in the series.
