This memoir had been on my TBR for a while and when I heard of Matthew’s tragic passing a few weeks ago, I felt compelled to pick it up. Phew, it was all of the things: funny, disconcerting, witty, sorrowful and beautiful. Matthew shares brutally honest recounts of his life (sooo much more than his time on Friends), specifically his relationships and struggles with drugs and alcohol, of course with a side of humor on every page. It’s an eye-opening first hand account to the world of addiction and made me more sympathetic to anyone whose ever struggled with substance abuse. As Matthew described, it is a “big terrible thing” that no one should have to face alone. I pray that he is resting in peace, far far away from all of the demons that haunted him during his time on earth. This book will deepen your understanding of addiction, recovery, and Matthew Perry’s life on his journey between the two.

This made me sad. I listened to the audiobook and Matty sounded so sad, I thought I could hear the pain in his voice, the prologue was like a premonition.

3/5 ☆
i should preface this & say that i don’t watch the show friends at all. i never really got into it so i don’t know a ton about it. i do want to watch it now bc he says you can tell what he’s addicted to from season to season. when he was skinny, he was addicted to drugs & when he was fat, he was addicted to alcohol.
i went in knowing he struggled with addiction & that he passed away a few months ago while probably on drugs. i didn’t know how deep his addictions to drugs & alcohol were, but he struggled his entire life. but i also know he loved making people laugh. & in friends & in his movies, that’s exactly what he did ❤️
if you read this book & didn’t listen to it, kudos to you because i don’t think i could’ve done it. it was very difficult to listen to with all of the drugs he was on & how much he abused alcohol.
the ending hits a little deeper when you realize that he lost his battle with the big terrible thing
