Dragged on a bit at times but there were definitely some great stories in here
I haven't cried this much reading a book since A LITTLE LIFE. And just like A LITTLE LIFE, it's heartbreakingly beautiful. I could only handle reading a story or two at a time. I will be going back to read my favorite stories over and over.
Em Mulheres difíceis, li contos de revirar o estômago de tão tristes e reais. Se indico o livro? Não sei. Por ser fã da autora, sou suspeita pra falar, mas acho que talvez valha a pena ler outros títulos de Roxane Gay antes (Fome, por exemplo).
Raiva, dor e resignação são constantes entre as páginas de Mulheres difíceis. Quase por unanimidade, as mulheres retratadas ali foram arruinadas de alguma forma por conta de um relacionamento amoroso tóxico. Clichê, eu sei, mas tão verdadeiro.
Tudo por conta do mito do amor romântico, uma criação cultural que nos faz perseguir o inatingível. Até Tom Jobim disse que é impossível ser feliz sozinho. Vinícius de Moraes escreveu que mulheres são feitas pro amor e pro perdão. O amor idealizado é a resposta à dúvida principal sobre o sentido da existência, afinal sem o outro, seremos eternamente incompletos.
Ah, que desserviço pro nosso emocional.

Man, this book was....grim. I kind of wasn't expecting it.
You can spot Roxane Gay's writing from a mile away. It is lean and direct and so intentional. It feels like every word is meticulously chosen. Her prose is a genuine joy to read.
In terms of subject matter, though, some of these stories were really hard to swallow. It took me longer than anticipated to finish this book because sometimes I needed a break. I wouldn't say it was necessarily an enjoyable read, but it was a good one -- necessary.
It's kind of the embodiment of that quote, "be kind, everyone you meet is fighting a battle." She dreams up these seriously broken characters and takes you back in time to make you feel sympathetic to them.
I didn't like how repetitive some of the themes were; i.e., women who enjoyed being hurt by men.

Some stories are devastating, some uplifting, and some waver between both. All are excellently written. I only didn’t care for the style of the last one, but I chalk that up to personal preference.
