Slow burn and the characters are kind of unlikable
Read this six months ago and I still think about some of the stories in this.
When I pick up a book called "Difficult Women", I expect the book to actually be about women. The further I got into it the madder I got - this book is all about dudes! I mean, technically every story had a woman in it, but only as sad orbiters to often better characterized men whose dicks either have caused all their problems or fix all of them. The stories are well written , but this is not what I expected from the title and intro blurb.

Gay plays fast and loose with genre, making the mundane magical and the magical mundane, in visually stunning form - in my mind's eye anyway (I imagined "The Sacrifice of Darkness" as an incredible streaming series). There's a lot of darkness here - literally in some cases, but there is also light, redemption, and love, in many forms.
Gay's writing is tremendous and many of these stories heart-wrenching and brutal. The reason for only three stars was the repetition. I understand utilizing similar themes or motifs, but at a certain point, the stories began to run together because elements were so similar.
When you touch me, you feel through me, through the ugliness beneath my skin, you make me feel, you hold me together, you push my skin back into its proper place.
