Incredible book of short stories, about women who don’t fit in, who aren’t what society expects them to be, or are hated by a society shaped to hate women. Beautiful stories, often tragic, uncomfortable, difficult to process. But sometimes magical, quirky. And always sucking you in so you never want to put the book down.

2/2.5 stars.

I disliked almost every individual story here...and I honestly think you're supposed to. But I loved the overall feeling the book gave me. Such a weird contrast!

When I read fiction writing by Roxanne Gay I become completely immersed in the voice of the character. I forget she's the writer. This is a great collection of stories.

Trigger warning :)

These were hard essays to get through, so I recommend reading them when you're in state of mind that can handle the dark truth behind them. The women illustrated in these short stories have complicated minds and in, many times, are put into hard situations. The essays I enjoyed the most are the ones in which Gay uses her metaphorical talents, such as a man who lives in a glass house with his glass wife and glass child. The stories represent how complex and beautiful women are. If you read them with a good outlook, you'll find that these stories are not sad or depressing, but powerful.

Disturbing.

This is not bad. I will be putting it down for now though due to my own mental health. As the title suggests, this book is about "difficult" women. Women who do not necessarily have a lot in their life, or women who don't live this live in a traditional way. While I appreciate all the LGBTQ+ rep as a member of the community, the despair within the stories I can not currently handle in a healthy manner. There is lots of abuse and sexual assault; in one case violent rape of a sex worker. I see the merit in these stories and I think they are important to feminism in order to show that different women can be strong in their own ways. If you are able to handle such themes, I would recommend this to you. Sometime in the future I will pick this back up and finish it. I am just not there yet. It doesn't sound right to say they are my favorites, so I will say that the stories 'Baby Arm' and 'How' are the two that stuck out/with me.
