Before I offer my personal review of this novel, I'd like to first let you know that I received a copy of the book from Penguin c/o a Goodreads giveaway.

Like some other reviews I have read here, I disagree with the book's comparison to "The Rosie Project". Although the books have similar plotlines (loner cerebral male comes out of his shell, meets woman and learns to live life), I found that while "The Rosie Project" was light, comical and flowed easily, "Love in Lowercase" was more deliberate. I was left confused about some parts as the novel moved quickly and events or realizations often happened out of nowhere which made them less believable. I wasn't convinced by certain character's motivations and I was lifted out of the story when this happened.

With that said - I enjoyed the overall experience of reading this book. It was a quick read, perfect for reading in one or two days. I enjoyed the characters, particularly the cat and the elderly neighbour. The book was quirky and interesting and I didn't want to put it down.

This book was strange, but in a good way. The main character reminded me of Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory in the way in which he thought and some of his mannerisms. He finds his carefully constructed world completely askew after a cat finds him and decides to stay, setting off a course of crazy events. The book is full of literary and music references and has a slightly different world viewpoint than most fiction I usually read (probably due to the fact that it was translated from another language). It was full of twists and turns and a nice summer read. I recommend it to anyone who wants "something different" that could steer you in other directions with its references.

I love how this book was written with short, quick chapters. I'm a word nerd, so all the discussion about words and language was really fun. Knocked off a half star because I felt like the ending left me hanging.

I thought this was a quirky, sweet read. Starting out with the appearance of a mysterious cat and being driven by whether or not Samuel would meet up again with Gabriela. I quickly realized that while the sweet romance aspect drew me in, it wasn't what kept me. I really liked seeing Samuel go from being this sad, almost depressed, single man living sequestered by himself, into opening up and meeting new people. Consciously changing the humdrum way he's always done things. The ending left off on a feel-good high note.

This is one of the nicest books I've read in years,
absolutely loved it from start to finish!

The title caught my eye straight away and the chapter titles continued in style.
I would have devoured it straight if I hadn't started reading it aloud to my kids!

Very real and human.
It touched so many emotions and all the wonderful cultural references made it thought provoking and inspiring.
I loved these unusual and eccentric characters all amusing and attractive in their individual ways including Mishima who rubs his way through the legs of the story with impeccable timing.

Often I don't want a good book to end or I become nervous as the end approaches hoping it won't be disappointing but I must say that this is one of the best endings I've ever read. I found it to be clever and satisfying, with a lovely completeness about it.

Will be reading again soon.
