I loved the plot synopsis when I read it.  I hoped, and was proven correct, that, while this is a mystery, it isn't graphic or scary.  The murder is just the point on which the plot pivots but isn't described in much detail.
The plot and all its tangled weavings was engaging.  I enjoyed the dual POV narration of Jo Jones and DCI MacAdams.  This gave the reader access to both the Ardemore family narrative as well as the police procedural.
I didn't see any of the ending coming; this was jaw-dropping even when you think it's over.
There were some loose ends left at the end so perhaps there might be a sequel.  Either that or a lot got cut from a much longer draft.
Overall, I loved the characters and recommend this book to lovers of suspenseful mysteries and/or police procedurals.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me access to an advanced copy!

I wanted to stick this out for bookclub but I just couldn’t get into it. The murder victim was a character we didn’t care about, so I wasn’t interested in solving the mystery. The dual POV was surprising and confusing, like there were two separate books going on, rather than, well, dual POV of the same story.

I found Jo to be incredibly annoying. Which I can support in the sense of, we as a society hate on autistic people way too much and make “weird annoying” people into outcasts. But it felt like the only decent thing about the first quarter of this was that there was authentic representation, like we’re so desperate for neurodivergent voices that we’ll take whatever boring stories we can get.

The narrator would’ve been fine for an American cast, or just a couple accents, but with such a British-heavy cast, it was difficult to tell which character was talking because the narrator couldn’t keep their accents consistent.

Honestly the thing that made me lose it was when Jo discovers the dead body and doesn’t know the emergency phone number to call. You’re telling me this autistic woman who is so concerned with masking and learning the rules of neurotypical society, who worked as a literal fact checker, moved to a new country and didn’t bother looking up the emergency number?? Absurd.
