This lovely, loving, and poignant study of friends & family (exploring definitions + expectations of each) also offers an unexpectedly fascinating study of video game/gamer history. I enjoyed the alternating perspectives throughout, helping us to better understand the characters and making their relationships feel deeper & richer. Occasionally scenes felt rushed or abrupt, leaving me wishing for more insight though that could also be a reflection of real life - we don’t always get the detail & closure we hope for.

This book is great. It’s not like Ready Player One. It’s kind of like The Social Network but with mildly more sympathetic characters at its core. It’s ultimately about the work/life balance of three friends that start a video game company together told through the eyes of 2 out of the 3 of them. It also might be peak late Gen-X/Early Millennial nostalgia in terms of the video games referenced and it essentially inserts itself into how things actually happened in reality. Please note the sexism, misogyny and racist tendencies the characters Sam, Marx and their family members came across is realistically depicted. There’s also an active shooter situation depicted in the novel so be aware if it triggers you. One character also engages in an inappropriate relationship with a person with authority over them and mind if it triggers you. One character has a mobility disability and there’s vivid depictions of his struggles with medical care and health. There is suicide and car accidents depicted as well.

This book is quite a short read yet it took me quite a while to finish, genuinely almost a year. It was extremely emotional and my fave character obviously got the sad ending but it is so meaningful how these relationships have evolved and changed through gaming and how they have had to adapt to the changes in technology as well as personal challenges like postpartum depression. It has its problems with plagiarism and I thought the writing style was too simple for me (just personal preference). I love how the ending is a full circle moment to the beginning, like regardless of their dips in friendships they're able to meet again and bond over what brought them together in the first place aka gaming. The author doesn't touch upon Jewish culture even though it is key to Sadie's identity which I find so frustrating because I feel like the author just added that in and never went into depth of her connection to religion, why mention it if it's not explored? I wish it was explored more.

Not the type of book I typically read but I was surprised with how fully I enjoyed and appreciated how fantastic it was. Full of emotion and complexity of human relationships.

I appreciated the emphasis placed on platonic love, and professional collaborations as a core and foremost relationships of one's life, prioritized above romantic partnership and marriage. An important story to be highlighted. Work, love and the ways one is used to show the other. The importance of telling the people we love that we love them. The contrast between the temporary and dispensable nature of life in a game, and the reality of real life and death. Was crying throughout. The only reason it is not 5 stars is that I find it frustrating when conflicts in books are driven by a failure to communicate.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book. My favorite thing for books to do is make me think of the human experience in a new way. The first half of the book had some beautifully written moments that did just that. I was sure I was going to want to reread the book so I could experience those moments again. I love stories of found families and love stories about friendship, and I love stories that include politics, because politics are personal. But then the book got depressing and dark. It felt both rushed and super slow at the same time. I did not enjoy the second half of the book at all and it honestly kind of ruined the first half for me. I felt there was so much more for the author to say about friendship, about disability, about sexism, about love and loss, but it fell short. I am someone who typically reads Sci-if and fantasy so I do look for more escapism in my books. I feel like being a book about video games it could have had a more special ending white still being true to the literary fiction genre. So many people love this book and I do understand why, the writing is lush and includes many references to all sorts of interesting material, the author does an amazing job writing from multiple perspectives and jumps around time flawlessly. It just isn’t what I look for in a book. Like video games I play, I want a satisfying ending that makes me want to play the game again to find all the secrets.
