maybe it was just not the right time for me to read this book or something, but it literally did nothing for me. i was just constantly waiting for the book to end... i didn't connect with the character at all. the mixed formatting of this book is normally something i love, as i find them to read super fast. but for this book, it just didn't work for me. it all felt like the same person talking/writing/narrating. all in all, i just wasn't a fan!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was so great that I basically read it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. Alaine Beauparlant is a senior in high school who is dealing with family issues that have made their way into her social interactions at school. After "The Incident" at school leaves Alaine suspended from school, and on a trip to her parents native Haiti to volunteer she begins to learn more about her distant mother and her family history.

I love this book so much! The mixture of contemporary fiction with magical realism drew me in and had me hooked!

This book is really interesting, it's one of those books you have to read and experience yourself. I couldn't explain why this story is magical without giving away some of the magic. What I will say is that I loved the main character and her journey throughout the book and I can definitely see myself in her story even though her experiences are very different from my own but so similar in a way too. I loved the writing style and the composition of the book, where the story is built on the concept of the MC Alaine writing an essay for a school project in history and creative writing. Each piece of the writing kind of showcases Alaine's ability to write about her experiences and emotions. I also learned a lot about Haiti while reading the book, partly because it was explicitly on the page and partly because some things mentioned in the story made me research it myself to widen my knowledge. In the end it is a story of finding yourself, of accepting that some things are what they are and can't be changed. In a way a story about grief and loss. About family and heritage. I clearly have a lot of thoughts but I'll end this here and maybe return later with more thoughts because it's getting late.
