Another case where I'm not sure what a rating means for the book. I'm not sure what liking it means.

This book was well written but it was difficult to read because it made me very uncomfortable. I read the afterword in which the author defends himself and I wonder, if he could go back in time, would he still publish this book? After seeing the way our culture mimics Humbert and says girls ask for rape and assault, and that the majority of men (and women!) react to assault by asking why a girl had on what she did or why she was where she was, as though women and girls can be, in any way, held accountable for their own assaults? How would the author feel about those things?

The book was well written, but the subject matter deplorable. I can’t help but wonder - without this book being popular and marketed as a love story (still don’t understand how you could argue this when Humbert bribes and manipulates Dolores the entire time and she runs away as soon as possible) - where would our culture be today? Would it be different? Would it be better for assault victims? I can’t help thinking it might be.
