Cycle of the Werewolf

This is an interesting format for King. Somewhere between a picture book and a graphic novel lies Cycle of the Werewolf. Though I sometimes take issue with King’s tendency to write bloated books, I found myself wanting more from this short work. I suppose you can’t always have it both ways.

The book’s chapters are the months of one year in (you guessed it) a small town in Maine. Each chapter/month is a vignette detailing an encounter with the werewolf terrorizing the town, complete with illustrations interspersed throughout. The illustrations are great, I must say, and overall it’s a fun little book, but it’s not major King.

You can read this in a couple of hours which I what I did. I thought it was new when I purchased it, but it’s more like they’ve given an old short story a fancy graphic novel treatment. The story is ok. It cycles through a year with a town dealing with a werewolf. One victim per month and one full colour drawing of the death. The illustrations are excellent. This was written in 1985 but this edition is pretty recent. I love Stephen king so he really can’t do much wrong by me. The story is formulaic but If you like his formula you’ll probably enjoy this.

Standard '80s King, with the trademark monster this time being a werewolf, as opposed to clown, or vampire. Well-written, if a tad repetitive when you know his other fiction; again, a small town shredded, and, again, a kid in the center. - Still, even so, an entertaining story, especially if you look for modern renditions of the motif.
