Cycle of the Werewolf

Stephen King

3.54 AVERAGE

This is a very short horror story by King. Somehow containing the narrative to only 12 days makes it seem fuller, focusing less on filling the space with extra details and instead telling only the most important facts as quickly as possible.

This isn't an easy book to track down and I've only seen a new copy once. I picked mine up second hand a few years ago but never got round to reading it. Originally devised as a Werewolf-themed calendar with a monthly illustration by Berni Wrightson, each month was supposed to be accompanied by a short vignette by Stephen King. He overwrote them (big surprise) and it was published as a limited hardcover.

So an illustrated Werewolf concept novel. Hmmm.

Each month tells a brief story, basically detailing another death. They initially stand alone but gradually characters recur and a small town comes together around the story, playing more like a whodunnit with rather basic horror elements. The tense and prose to start don't flow that easily (King comes across rather flowery, though it improves) and there's nothing too flash but I have to admit, despite not liking it much to start with it grew on me.

The illustrations though generally good, vary in quality (I preferred the black and white layouts depicting the countryside) and fit the theme and era nicely. It's not a classic or even an essential King book but it is short and easy to read (took less than an hour).

(As an unrelated aside, my second-hand copy has the following inscription at the front: "Rach, didn't think I'd seen this one. Love Nik. July '00" - the two 0's of the date have little pupils in looking down)

The writing is, well, King. Sleek and fun to read. The art is good. I enjoyed the experience. Classic hidden werewolf story.

A great, quick read. Gorgeous illustrations.

There was something here that was kind of interesting, but even with the cool illustrations, it couldn't overcome the need for a good editor.

Words are recycled to heavily in single chapters, for example. King has done much better character work before and after.

If it weren't for Wrightson's illustrations, this would have been a total flop for me.
