This is how werewolves are meant to be.

Deadly, rip-out-your-throat beasts that have no recollection of being human. Their human counterpart doesn't remember violently taking the lives of the innocent, with only bruises and scratches making them suspicious of the beast they are.

None of this high school sweetheart turned fuzzy lap dog. No love triangles, vampires, or sexy Native Americans.

Nope. Terror, blood, violence. Of course Stephen King would get it right.

"There is another shattering roar, a flood of warm yellow breath, and then a great red pain as the creature's jaws sink into the deltoid muscles of his back and rip upward with terrifying force." (page 56).

Stephen King's novella, "Cycle of the Werewolf," breaks down one year in the town of Tarker Mills. Each month comes and goes with a full moon, a beast, and a violent death. Each month the beast hungers and kills a neighbor; a friend. The culprit being one you'd least expect.

Each time the beast emerges King makes sure to describe the events and scene as gruesomely as possible making for a suspenseful description of the beast that is a werewolf.

Eventually an unlikely hero arises whom exposes the beast and finds himself in an uncomfortable predicament. King builds said hero's character with suspense in only 127 pages. Although a short read "Cycle of the Werewolf" is a must read for Stephen King fans and those who are confused as to what a werewolf is.

Oh and there's pictures. Berni Wrightson does a great job taking King's words and creating beautiful, terrifying images.

A little early this year but I love reading this novella annually around Halloween. It's not a masterpiece but it was one of my first horror reads back in high school and it holds a special place in my heart.

Happy fall to all!

Cycle of the Werewolf is a long short story (although packaged more like a novel), the tale of a werewolf in Tarker's Mills, ME, where most bad things happen in the Stephen King universe. The titular werewolf leaves a trail of bodies in its wake, until even the most skeptical residents of Tarker's Mills has a hard time believing it's anything but a Beast.

Cycle is decent story, sporting minimalist prose vs King's usual style, but definitely lacking in his trademark development of most characters. A light read, can be wiped out in an hour or two, and worth reading if you're a King fan (or a fan of horror shorts).

I watched Silver Bullet (the movie based off this book) first and knew that I needed to read the book. Silver Bullet is one of my all time favorite horror movies and I was immediately drawn to the book. It was amazing. The cut to each month was well done. Everything was greatly detailed. 5/5 book I would recommend to anyone willing to read it. Not too scary either. Just a real good read.

krátke a fajn. neurazí. nenadchne. keď človek potrebuje niečo také nenáročné a rýchle.

a classic werewolf story with cool illustrations! i agree with a lot of the other reviews that the illustrations throughout were the best part. the story itself was very short and i wasn’t really connected to any of the characters, but still enjoyed the reveal of who the werewolf was toward the end. also i know it was the 80s and i have heard about king’s use of the word before, but was still somehow not expecting to see the n-word thrown in there randomly?

I've always adored the movie that's based on this book and I'm so happy I finally got to read it.

I've heard it said that this is one of King's goriest books and I suppose that's true, though no killings were explained in extreme detail like I was expecting.

It was a short but very nice (and scary!) read.
