[98/166]

Thick and sometimes impenetrable as ice-nine (WHICH BY THE WAY: THERE ARE ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF ICE, SO ICE IX DOES EXIST EVEN IF ICE NINE DOESN'T...) but with little pearls of wisdom scattered throughout, Vonnegut was right on the mark when he described each chapter as "a joke". A lot of these jokes are aggressively nihilistic/cynical but the book is also about the Cold War so it makes sense. Bokonoism predicted modern burnout to just about everything, and foot fetishes. Because man................. I guess we're going with that. Honestly, I don't know how much there is to say about this one, as this is one of those books you really just have to EXPERIENCE.

This should be required reading for the international security class I'm taking. A good bit of it is dated, but it was also written in 1963 so I guess it makes sense. I thought this book was interesting, absurd, funny, disturbing. Making sense of violence and human nature is just as confusing in 2025 as it was then.

This was a miss for me. Strange and quirky, it was a little too out there for me, the wild twists and turns kept taking me out of the story. I’ve really enjoyed Breakfast of Champions when I read it years ago so this one might just not have been for me.
