This, along with the Duke of Sin, are the highlights of Maiden Lane for me. A lot of that has to do with the MCs. Artemis is awesome- no other way around it. She's strong, witty, caring, intelligent, really all around great. Maximus is the brooding type and can be an a$$ sometimes, but I like the way he NEEDS Artemis and learns to break through his conventional society to honestly pursue her in the end.

This book just didn’t work for me and made the flaws I find in EH storytelling glaringly obvious. Usually I can ignore them if I’m enjoying the romance but here? Nope.

Maximus was a prick as a teenager and is even more of one now as an adult. The way he treated Artemis was horrible. He was so adamant that he couldn’t marry her right until the bitter end, and was honestly really cruel about it in private. Having to read that he “had standards” as a duke was 🥴 I was willing to give him a chance (even though I disliked him in the second book where he was trying to force his sister into a marriage with her abuser !!) but the point of an asshole mmc in romance is to REDEEM them. Maximus stayed the same and only changed his mind when Artemis nearly died! (That was another plot point that annoyed me.)

The fondness Artemis had for her cousin annoyed me too, because she was a racist, nasty pos !! I read the short story that followed this book and surprise, surprise, all was forgiven….. 🙄

My least favourite in the series so far. The only thing I enjoyed was Maximus’ dirty talk during a certain sex scene. It was honestly BONKERS.

The Batten Siblings story so far are the story that I enjoyed the least.

The idea of them being together was too forced. In the previous book, it was even written that Maximus was not even remotely interested in Artemis or aware of her existence. It's very unreasonable that Maximus suddenly changed his love for this girl he didn't know about previously. It's a shame what happened to Penelope, even though she was stupid, she deserves to be the star of the book and experience a change in attitude for the better! This would makes more sense.
