I've never read a historical romance quite like this! It was a perfect blend of vigilante superhero drama and period romance - a combination I didn't know I needed until now. While the hero resembled Bruce Wayne in many ways, I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the story. Artemis the heroine was the heart of the novel, overlooked and sidelined she takes the reigns to try and save her brother and I loved her perspective.

I also really enjoy how the maiden lane series uses different chapter POVs to introduce characters who become the focus in later books.

The story started off really well for me. I found Artemis to be an interesting character and I was excited to get to know Maximus since he really made me angry in Notorious Pleasures. Unfortunately, as I kept reading, I felt that the characters got a little bland. Fortunately, my interest wasn't completely lost since I was keen on continuing the book.

I admire Artemis for her belief in her brother. I really liked their relationship. Everytime I read about Apollo, I felt like crying :( I also admire Artemis for taking the reins of her destiny when she decided to sleep with Maximus. It was her own decision and it allowed her to be free for once. She knew what she was getting into and she was not missish about it. But even though I had always thought her to be practical, the girl needed a reality check, which was provided by Cousin Bathilda. Unfortunately, Penelope had to barge in and make a scene as well - so unnecessary ugh that brat. The Duke of Scarborough is too good for her to be honest.

It took me a while to get to know and understand Maximus. We never hear the full story of how his parents died until the end and only then was I able to fully comprehend why and how he became the way he is. Maximus didn't want to marry for love, he wanted to marry for the dukedom. He admitted that his father would've wanted him to marry for love, but that he felt it was his duty to him to marry for the dukedom. But really, as we find out later on, he was just acting that way out of guilt. I really felt for him though. I can't even imagine going through something like that.

I really liked Artemis and Maximus together. What was different in this novel is that when they actually liked each other! Even when Artemis was trying to blackmail him. They had this comfortable companionship early on in the novel that the couples from the previous books didn't have until after they formally got together. That being said, I can't help but feel that Artemis deserves better. Even though I finally was able to understand Maximus as a character, I can't say that I like him to be honest.

As for the mystery, it was very unsurprising; figured out who the culprit was from something that Cousin Bathilda said lol. I also found it strange that Maximus took off his glove to help Artemis up as the Ghost in the first chapter. Could you be more reckless? But Artemis had to get that ring in order for the novel to happen so lol

Anyway, for me personally, the book had a strong start, but started becoming slow after Artemis and Maximus got together. By then, Apollo was already rescued and in all honesty, the mystery plot could have been resolved earlier on. Spoiler I loved that Godric was the one who killed Noakes. I loved seeing all three of them together.

Oh, I was so excited to find out that Asa was the owner of the theatre!! And I can't wait for Apollo's story! I like him so much already! I'm also curious to see how Trevillion and Phoebe meet.
