The premise was very interesting, but I think overall fell a tad flat, especially with the ending.

Lots of thoughts here.
I enjoyed the criticism but didn’t like the hypocrisy in some criticism.
It was a weird book

The reviews (especially the Guardian one) led me to believe that this was a book about language learning and how being granted perfect fluency in no time at all might affect a learner, but the novel only ever skirted these issues. Meanwhile, it managed to be angry and preachy about every conceivable problem with the possible exception of cats. I‘ll give it one star for keeping me sufficiently interested to read to the end, but really, this isn’t a good book at all.

Very clever conclusion that clarified the questions that built throughout and gave context to the winding nature of the story! While these aspects did serve the narrative well and I found putting the pieces together satisfying, they did detract slightly from my enjoyment prior to the point of realisation.

A mystery with a difference. Definitely enough below the radar at first to keep the interest, and by the time the big reveal comes, you find yourself thinking “I should have spotted that”.
