I spent half of this book confused about the magic system, confused about the concept and spent most of it waiting for some action to happen.

The concept was cool and different to other fantasy books ive read, especially it starting in a contemporary world.

Though of course it has similar tropes to most romantasy books plus the book having a similar name to acotar which make no sense in the context of the book, which tells me it was only named this way to draw acotar fans in, because it doesn't have any similarities.

Will i read the second one? Potentially, mostly because nothing happened in this one except constant world building and action happening in the last 50 pages.

2.75 stars.

This was A LOT of info dumping. It can be so daunting to start a new fantasy series and have to understand a new world. There was a lot of information in this book. The world building was very detailed...but it did get a little boring sometimes. I wish there would have been more Romeria/Zander interactions where they weren't just talking about the political cluster going on.

Overall, though, the plot was good and I need to know what happens next! I did mostly listen to this while doing chores and other stuff, which did help since I wasn't just sitting there bored through parts of it. It maybe did make me a little more confused, though, since I don't always listen as well. There are a lot of details, but even missing some of them, I still can follow the storyline enough to stay interested. It's not as confusing as Crescent City 1, so it's got that going for it.

Definitely has From Blood and Ash vibes.

*2.5

reread this so I could read the sequel but turns out I forgot everything bc it was not worth remembering. I was bored the entire time. the writing isn’t bad but I didn’t feel any chemistry between the fmc and mmc.

I would die for these characters

I’m panicking writing this in the queue before a gig so it’s not gonna make much sense buttttt:

Pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this?? I just adored it - completely adored it.

To put it plainly: the synopsis of this book was confusing, underwhelming and did not do it justice at all. So imagine my surprise when I started reading and encountered this masterpiece. Yes this was very content heavy, filled with lots of info dumping that made my silly little head spin - but I find that is almost a requirement of a developed high fantasy book - particularly one where the MC has complete memory loss. Me: keeping a print out of the glossary, pronunciation guide and map next to me as I read any high fantasy book.

This had such a wonderful slow build to romance - truly chefs kiss. If this wasn’t slow burn I would’ve been very uncomfortable with the idea of Zander falling in love with his parents supposed murderer??? But the buildup of Romy slowly revealing the true aspects of herself to him, and him falling for her in that way was BEAUTIFUL. oh to be loved as urself
