My thoughts on this are going to make no sense at all because of how god damn long it took to read this (nearly a month) so i'm just going to bullet point fire some things out there...
I thought that this had a really interesting concept to start off with. There's a girl who is a thief and gets recruited by a mysterious figure that wants her to do a job for them. Seems pretty bog standard until she arrives at this manor house and this person starts to talk about magic and demons etc.
After accepting to do this job she is stabbed almost immediately in the heart by a horn and told not to mess up... i mean what... This is where things get really interesting because she wakes up in a different world, inhabiting the body of an evil princess who has killed a rival royal family. Not the most ideal thing to be thrust into that's for sure...
All of that sounds so interesting and unique. I was fully engaged with the story more or less up to this point (because if how cool it was), but quickly things started to read like the majority of romance fantasy books. There were a lot of elements too that i thought were VERY similar to parts of Sarah J Maas's TOG series and Armentrouts From Blood & Ash series. It was just little details that have a bigger impact on the overall story that seemed borrowed from these authors, and i otherwise wouldn't have noticed if i had read this book first. (i'm talking about 'vampire' like beings with magic, deities, some of the politics etc) It isn't really that big of a deal since i still really enjoyed the book, but i just found myself making a lot of these connections, and was slightly brought out of the story, especially after how uniquely it started off...
I thought that the prologue was really interesting too. A lot more compelling to read that the main story, but i think that might be because so much about the characters, world, and story were still a mystery and again, just seemed so different.
While the FMC's pov is interesting enough, she seems to lack depth and character. Just seems very normal, like there isn't anything that makes her stand out other than her past, how crazy her family are, and everything that is currently happening to her. Even the prince who has kept her prisoner for the majority of the book seems like the usual archetype of a romance fantasy prince. He's tall, dark, handsome, runs hot and cold, has a different rare type of magic etc...
I loved the moment when Romeria went to the market and saved the baker woman from being stuck with that evil Lord. It was really freaking sweet and quite a nice character moment, especially since she had been so against being seen as the 'queen' and then she goes and does something so selfless for the people.
I am still kinda mad that it took nearly the whole book for things to get interesting, It was just so god damn slow right at the start, with hardly anything of note actually happening to make it interesting.
I wasn't entirely expecting the ending. Thought there would be a rebellion or a usurp of some kind but i didn't think it would happen at the end when so much other crazy stuff was happening, again, especially with how slow the rest of the book had been. Sure feels like some of the craziness could have been paced throughout to make the whole thing more enjoyable to read.
I already know that the next book is going to be full of all the angst between the two main characters now that he thinks she has betrayed him (again) as well as some of the other characters he thought he could trust..

Can't say I was a huge fan of this one. I might eventually go and read the rest of the series, but that's mainly because I have a love-hate relationship with cliffhangers.
It was fine.... but then I realized its a whole series and I'm just not interested in the characters enough to do 4 or 5 books of it.
This was a definite full on enemies to lovers romantasy and I was all for it!
I really liked this new take on going from real world to....something / somewhere else and the intrigue and mystery for Romy and about Romy. She is strong and can look after herself and yet is still the 'damsel in distress' without being weak or pathetic.
Zander is complex and and seemingly a truly good guy and he is always on the right side and so how can you not root for his character.
The banter between these two brings alive their individual characters but also their very complicated relationship.
I cannot wait to get book 2 and start reading!
I received this ARC for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
