“Do not mistake hardheartedness for strength. To live in this world and to hold on to your humanity, your compassion, your joy—I believe that is strength.”
It has been a long time since a series has caught my attention this strongly & then managed to keep it with the same intensity. The first book set up a great plot for this sequel. While I find this books detrimental to the storyline, it felt like such a wild ride at the same time.
I love our main character, Clare. She holds onto hope like a life line. Other leading character, Dorran, is the perfect partner in crime to have for survival. He’s so precious, I adore him dearly. Together, they’re an incredible duo. However… there was a brief period where Clare drove me bonkers. I was literally screaming at her. Later redeemed, in my opinion anyhow.
The setting got boring for a bit but mainly just because it felt repetitive — the descriptions were still astounding no matter how stagnant the setting felt at the start. Coates did manage to break my heart & make me hold my breath so regardless … she has a story worth hearing here.
We were given valuable information in this novel, necessary for understanding the best strategy of survival… with that being said, I cannot explain to you how it feels to have so much happen at one time & feel like nothing is actually happening at the same time.
Either way, the book still gets 4stars & book 3 is calling my name & I cannot wait to dive in to the next stage with our perfect pair!

I didn’t like it as much as the first book but still enjoyed it and appreciated the progress of the storyline and the pace Darcy Coates sets.
We finally get some answers about what we are dealing with!! Which was my number one question from the beginning of the first book. So I’m thrilled to know more! I’m worried about how interested I’m going to stay with the story going forward because where else can we go from here without becoming mundane. So far I’m loving it and Darcy is very talented at keeping the reader interested. The twists and turns and questions and writing are all fantastic! Clare was a bit hard to deal with this book but I love Dorran still. If anything ever happens to Dorran I will Riot.
July 2020 — It took me much longer to read this second one but I did still enjoy this book quite a bit. I did like the first book in this series more but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. And I can’t wait to see where this story goes next.
