Secrets in the Dark picks up at the very moment we were left in from Voices in the Snow. This second Black Winter book focuses more on Clare’s sister, Beth. Beth has been surviving in an underground bunker, alone. Now her generator has died and her air filtration system has collapsed. She is stuck inside in the dark, running out of air. The hollows are scratching at the door. Clare and Dorran are hundreds of miles from her and struggling to survive themselves. But they come up with a plan to try to get to Beth. As they fight to stay alive in the world outside the mansion, the trip takes on a new urgency when Clare and Dorran meet a scientist who knows how the hollows were created. He may even know how to destroy them. The first book had mostly taken place in one house and had two characters. This second book adds some new scenery and new characters. It is a breath of fresh air. This story, for me, had a very distinct early seasons Walking Dead feel to it. They fight their way through a horde of hollows in the city to get to a scientist who is the only one left and has the origin story. I happen to love The Walking Dead, so this is right up my alley. This book is more suspense and thriller and psychological than the first, and while I adored so much about that one, this one was more fun for me. This is a more action-packed thrill ride. 5/5 stars.

Overall this series was definitely not the type i was expecting BUT i still love it anyway! I love how it still has a ghostly death vibe but instead it's a little bit more adventurous. I love the characters Dorran and Clare, and I think they work perfectly together. This book took us out of the mansion and out into the city so there was A LOT of suspense throughout. Once they reach a certain destination (no spoilers) they meet someone who I think plays a great role in the story and Im glad we somewhat learn why the whole mutant people happened.
Finally, the end SURPRISED me so so much! I am happy to find out who rescued them but I am even more curious now what has been going on! Can't wait to read the third one!!

It was okay. Not as good as the first book. Kinda lost interest after 40% of the book and had to force myself to read the rest. Not sure if I'll read the 3rd book in the series

DID NOT FINISH: 80%

I got through the first book, mostly because the monsters were cool. This one was a slog that I gave up on when I saw a twist coming and was so irritated by it that I just stop listening.
Ezra/Peter, not actually sure what happens when they find out, because I quit before that and honestly don't really care, it's existence was enough to put me off.

Most the character conflict felt forced and was often pointless. So much arguing about what to do next when it's obvious what must happen to continue the story. It often felt like the only reason Claire and Dorran survive is because they are the main characters and this series isn't dark enough to kill them. They are constantly foolish and reckless. Claire manages to make almost every situation worse. Dorran doesn't do much except constantly shift responsibility to Claire.

Anyway, it is a "zombie" horror series, so it'll probably turn into humans being the real monsters in the end, and that just doesn't work for me. People do terrible things all the time and that doesn't scare me, it just makes me sad.

"Secrets in the Dark" is a good sequel. We learn more about the stillness and survival. There are creepy moments and a lot of hollow action. Clare and Dorran grow closer, and both learn more about themselves in the world. We're in Clare's head in the books, and I wish we had more Dorran. I think his thoughts would be interesting. The middle felt slow to me, but otherwise I really enjoyed this book and am excited for the next two.
