'The Little Mermaid' by Metaphrog duo Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers is not an adaptation of the Disney movie, but it is a pretty faithful adaptation of the original story by Hans Christian Andersen.

A mermaid lives with her older sisters under the sea. They all dream of the day when they are 15 and they can make one visit to the surface. They all report back on what they sea: icebergs, sunsets and other wonders. The youngest sees a prince and ends up saving him from a shipwreck. She wants to become human and makes a bargain with the sea witch, but since this is Hans Christian Andersen, you must know that it won't end happily.

The artwork is beautiful. The water has light shimmering in it. The prince's ship sails on a golden sea, then glows white as lightning highlights it during the storm. There is detail in all the ink work. It does the story justice in all it's beauty and sadness.

Storywise this is the traditional tale of the Little Mermaid - nothing new, so great twists or reimaginings. So what really made this book for me was the art, specifically the colours. It was so vibrant and they really used the colours to communicate the mood of the story. I read an e-copy of this and I thought it looked amazing so I can only imagine how beautiful the print version is!

I just recently read the original story of The Little Mermaid, so when I saw this, I decided to see if it was any different, or just a direct retelling with graphics. It's mostly the same, the ending is just different. Either way, I still don't think it's a great story. I just don't agree with what she does just in the hopes of MAYBE marrying this prince she saw a handful of times, but never interacted with. What you see in the Disney movie is actually watered down, obviously, and I don't even agree with that either! All that being said, the graphics in this are gorgeous. So that's why I gave it one more star than the original.

Growing up, I always love the Disney version of The Little Mermaid. A few years back, I found the original story by Hans Christiaan Anderson. This book is based on that version. So don't expect a happy ending! Nevertheless, the story of the little mermaid comes to live through gorgeous illustrations. I was fascinated by every detail and facial expression. Gorgeous edition of The Little Mermaid.

My favorite kind of fairy tale with a tragic ending. Beautiful character designs.

There was nothing of a revisioning in this tale of the little mermaid. The duo responsible, Metaphrog, are not new to the comic game, and perhaps for this reason, I expected some spin or unique ... something.
This is not to say that it was bad to experience the Anderson version of the story largely untampered, but it wasn't quite what I expected.
I was originally drawn in by the lovely cover, and I expected lush and stylized illustrations to really carry the story for me. Sometimes this proved true, but at other points the illustrations actually pulled me away from the text. For one thing, sometimes our MC looks about 40 and a rough 40 at that. Many of the shapes and faces were repeated, but some of the important characterizations seemed inconsistent. The color was lovely, but the illustrations did not give me all that I had hoped for after the beautiful cover.
This review feels overly harsh - the comic provided exactly what it promised to - it was the graphic novel version of Andersen's Little Mermaid. It wasn't any more than that, but it did a fine job of being that.

The original story of the little mermaid, like many of Andersson's stories has Christian undertones. In fact it is said that mermaids have no soul and when they die they will just be sea foam. In fact, I actually like that reading of the story.

In this version there is only death that she is worried about. It was better than the Disney version, to be sure. And the pictures were nice but I still prefer the original, with its word imagery.
