I couldn’t help thinking that this was a modern retelling of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Rather than being stranded by a downpour in a stuffy, gothic mansion, our modern crew is a high-tech, multi million dollar start up having a Board Meeting while vacationing at a chalet in the French Alps. When an avalanche strikes the area and all communication is cut off, people start disappearing one by one. The atmosphere was so convincing and intense that I was freezing most of the time I was reading this book … And I live in Florida. LOL But it was a pleasant escape.

didn't see all of the twists coming

I actually quite liked this but damn did I need a resort map in the index or something.

I really wanted to like this book! Ruth Ware was one of my favorite authors before reading her most recent novels, Turn of the Key and One by One.

One by One was at some points an engaging and compelling read. Ware does an excellent job with characterization and setting, her descriptions are stellar. However, I feel that she is repeating patterns too closely. Her writing may possibly be verging on predictable. For example, I specifically remember a scene with prescription pills in tea in A Dark, Dark Wood. Also, there was a climactic chase through the forest. While the cast and characters are drastically different, the killer reveals from each book feel too similar.

Overall, I did enjoy reading Ruth Ware’s new novel, but I was let down by the lack of scare-factor and predictable ending.

I felt that it was very slow to start and so fixated on the company that these characters worked for, but the last half made it worth it to finish it!! Ruth Ware is still one of my favorite authors but I think I like some of her other works more than this one.
