I’m very disappointed. This book was one i was looking forward to and i just don’t think it delivered.
First, i don’t know if maybe im off base here but this book felt like it had too much adult content to be YA. Some of those scenes felt like they had everything but the kitchen sink.
I was also just confused 90% of the time. I think the book was going for like intrigue don’t know who you could trust vibes and backstabbing. But it just felt like half baked and not well supported. Like one minute we trust the MMC the next we don’t and it’s not really clear why other than he is hot and the MMC. I also thought that when the two friends killed the third friend in their group that was the most whack thing that could have happened. It also felt like it only happened because it needed to be the reason they teamed up with Samson.
The main character I wish i could have liked. I love a good complex character but her choices just made no sense. I can get like murder is a semi common thing in this world but like… it’s still not really okay. And then it’s like portrayed as if it’s just a “flaw” of hers. And she needs to forgive/accept her flaws. Having the hero mansplain what she needs to do to make herself better was so 🤢. Like why can’t female characters just realize this themselves? I get other people help you get different perspectives but come on this was just like so performative and icky.
Also, literally all of these people are the villains. So I’m supposed to root for the guy that against their will turned his own people into vampires because he was suffering from the male loneliness epidemic and wanted company. Be so ffr. So I’m supposed to feel sorry because his people hate him? No i don’t.
The romance was also just not good. Call me old fashioned but i don’t want my love interest to be a bully. It’s not romantic tension it’s abuse. I rooted for his friend way more!
Then the June thing. I think I’d lose my shit if i found out my sister just decided she would fuck off and didn’t care if i thought she was dead or kidnapped so she could gain power. And her sister is like shocked that she was looking for her. Are you serious?
I can’t. I was so frustrated with most of this book. I wanted to like it so bad. I just think the plot was really convenient and i didn’t understand what these characters did or why. And they just weren’t likeable. I hope this book finds its people but unfortunately that’s not me.

Immortal Dark asks the question what it looks like to be monstrous, to compromise your unflinching morals and self hatred, to see the world as it is. It asks the reader what it means to be ugly, and to face that ugliness. Kidan is an unflinching main character who must accept her monstrousness in order to survive and it is delicious. There are moments when the book becomes somewhat trope heavy but the moments that outweigh it genuinely push it over the edge of mediocrity.
