Im so annoyed at myself for not waiting until book 2 was published to read this. Literally the definition of the "we need more complex female characters "you couldn't even handle HER"" meme. GOD. This was a proper enemies to lovers as well, not a rivals, or instant attraction but denial type beat. Kidan is unhinged and very murdery and I adore her for it. She reminds me GREATLY of Zeitan (IronWidow), and I also adored her. The amharic, culture and mythology twisted up in this book made for a really fun vampire novel.

LOVE LOVE LOVE. I’ve never loved a flawed character more I think this may be one of the few times they didn’t piss me off and I was rooting for them the whole time

I did not know anything about this book prior to reading. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I loved this book! I did not want to put this book down. I loved the vampires, enemies to lovers and dark academia aspects of this book. The female main character is such a bad ass! I loved her so much! I can’t wait for book 2!

Immortal Dark delivers an extraordinary and intricately crafted world that’s as immersive as it is unique, grounding vampire lore within Ethiopian culture in a way that feels refreshingly original. Girma’s detailed approach to world-building brings Uxlay University to life, creating a dark academia setting filled with lore and layered histories that are both fascinating and ambitious.

That said, the world-building could occasionally feel overwhelming. At times, it veered into info-dumping, making it a challenge to keep pace. The sheer volume of detail is impressive but, at moments, felt like too much to process in one go.

The enemies-to-lovers dynamic between the main characters leans heavily on the “enemies” aspect. While this adds intensity and tension, I did find myself wondering when—or if—they’d ever reach the “lovers” part, which led to some frustration along the way. Despite these bumps, their relationship is intriguing and dynamic, a slow burn that adds depth to the story.

Overall, Immortal Dark offers an exciting journey through the mysterious halls of Uxlay University. This opener to the trilogy shows promise, and I’m looking forward to seeing where Girma takes this world and these characters next.

This book is hard for me to review. I thought about DNFing a few times but ultimately powered through. I loved the cultural aspects of the story. It's rare to find a book about black vampires which drew me in. Unfortunately that was about all I enjoyed. I typically love antiheroes. The more "anti" less "hero" the better, however I could not make myself like the MFC. I didn't feel there was anything more to her besides impulsive immature over the top reactions. Those were followed by absolute shock when there were consequences. I felt the emotions weren't based upon any real feelings. The relationships between characters seemed flat, going from one extreme emotion to another without much to explain the change. I also felt it pushed the YA genre quite a bit. I won't be continuing the series but encourage those who enjoy that YA mindset to give it a try.

2.5 stars.

Personajes principales poco construidos.
