Meh….
I really struggled with this one, I found it meandering and repetitive, I kept waiting for things to happen. After 300 pages I skimmed to the end that I knew was coming.
I generally like books about grief but this one was missing something for me and I was never invested in the main characters, they all felt a bit flat. I appreciated the openness in regards to anxiety, but again I couldn’t connect to these characters on a real level.
I hate to give a bad review and I know people who loved this book but sometimes they just don’t all hit us in the feels, unfortunately this was one of them for me.

This book was right up my alley as of lately. Anna is missing her late husband terribly one night and decides to dial his number to hear his voice on the voicemail only to realize that his number has been assigned to someone else.
On the other end of the line, Brody can sense that she needs to talk so he listens. It become somewhat of a habit and the two develop a relationship from there. In each other's minds, they are just friends. Anonymous friends that can spill their hearts out to one another without judgement although it seems that Anna is the only one really confiding much. Brody is still in so much emotional pain from his personal life that he's not ready to share until he realizes he has to. On the other hand, Anna doesn't want to be in love with Brody because she already got to be married to the love of her life.
The two work through their emotional problems individually in order to be able to face each other in person. To figure out what they have between them.

This story stole my heart and I think it will be awhile before I get it back. The Last Goodbye is heart wrenching slow burn romance story about two people who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. I loved everything about this story. Anna and Brody had captured my attention and I couldn’t stop listening to the story until I knew what was going to happen between the two of them. The plot of the story while so sad it seemed so real, like I was listening to a story happening in real life. The narrator was absolutely amazing too, even with the male characters. This story for sure will be in the running for my favorite story of 2021.
The Last Goodbye is a highly engaging story right from the very beginning. The book is emotional at times, but one that had me rooting for both Anna and Brody as they worked their way through their grief. Each of these characters was extremely well developed. I loved their ability to push each other out of their comfort zone to reclaim some joy in their lives. There is a scene reminiscent of Sleepless in Seattle that will keep you guessing. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book which was narrated by Antonia Beamish. The clarity and tone of her voice was perfect for this story. I would not hesitate to recommend this version to those who enjoy this format.
What I Liked About The Last Goodbye
- The well developed characters
- The poignant, beautiful storyline
- The theme of trying to let go of past relationships to move on

3.5. This book was very sad and took me a while to get into. However it’s still very cute with a happy ending so if you want to cry a lot this is the book for you.
This book is so beautiful.
Anna's husband Spencer died in an accident. He was hit by a drunk driver walking to the shop near their home. Three years on, Anna is still struggling to come to terms with his death. She meets up with his parents, brother and sister-in-law for fortnightly lunches and this probably doesn't help with the moving on thing either. She also senses that his mother is becoming distant with her. It shows an honest account of a relationship between the wife and parents of a deceased person.
Anna's best friend, Brazilian food stylist Gabi pushes Anna to try and meet someone new but she just isn't ready.
Distraught at the thought of entering a new year without him, Anna calls his mobile number just to hear his voice on the voicemail message but someone picks up. Brody. They end up talking on the phone for over a year, really helping each other. Brody is hiding something from Anna too.
You really feel the aching pain that Anna is feeling after losing her husband. Brody's struggles are written exceptionally well and your heart really goes out to him. The development of both characters throughout the book is wonderful.

Anna's husband died tragically almost 3 years ago and she is still struggling with his loss. On New Year's Eve, she calls his old phone number and a man picks up. Anna proceeds to connect with her new friend as she navigates her friendship with Gabby, her standing with her mother-in-law, Gayle, and finding her way back to the world of the living. This story provides a strong glimpse into Anna's life and relationships. Anna begins to rely on her calls with her mysterious man, Brody. They are both dealing with loss and find ways to help each other through their struggles. It's worth a listen.

I Love You and perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes I knew I had to read it. This was everything I was expecting it to be - emotional, romantic, painful, and hopeful all rolled into one. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Antonia Beamish and it made this story even more emotional than it was on its own! She was the perfect voice for Anna, and I loved her narration for not only her but Brody's parts as well. It broke my heart that Anna would call Spencer’s phone, but I love that she was able to make the connection with Brody through doing that. Even with his secret that she later learns, which is heartbreaking by the way, this still had an ending that I absolutely adored and the ride we take to get there is filled with grief and pain, but also some hope and laughter as well. I loved the way Lucas wrote this novel, and I found myself tearing up more than once.
Anna is such a well-thought-out character, and I could practically FEEL every single emotion she was going through. I really enjoyed quite a few characters in the novel although I was not a big fan of Spencer's mother. She was the cause of a lot of drama for Anna as the story goes on, but by the time we get to the end I could understand some of her feelings and it really just goes to show that everyone handles grief differently. If you have experienced a loss of some kind, The Last Goodbye will probably leave you in a puddle as it did with me. It was such a touching story in so many ways, and I loved that through the grief there could be love and joy again. I fell in love with Lucas' writing and you can tell that she probably has just a few books under her belt. I am so happy I found this author and recommend The Last Goodbye to fans of emotional women's fiction and romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
