2.5. This book leaves a lot to be desired. While it does provide some great insight and helpful tips, overall there is some reductionary and overly casual language as well as gaps or oversights that limit the beneficial parts. It’s a good step forward for librarians to read but disappointing if you’re looking for more self-reflective, intellectual, and radical approach to librarianship and working with those experiencing homelessness.

Chock full of useful techniques and advice about dealing with the homeless and other customers, this is a goto book for librarians. The central message is to treat people with respect and compassion; however, Dowd's strategies are practical and well considered.
