This book was incredibly enlightening and I wish I had read it years ago when it was first published. It would’ve saved me so much heartache and self-questioning. It was difficult to read at points because there’s so much of myself and my childhood that I could recognize in the book that I needed to step back and take a breather. It’s a great starting point for working on myself.

I can’t believe I just found this book!
I wish I would’ve found it sooner! So helpful in filling in the blanks I was missing in my recovery. Thank you!

Good book for clients. I read this with a particular person in mind that I think will resonate with it. I really liked part 3. It really reinforces the need to process all those difficult experiences and emotions.
This book has a lot of valuable and clearly communicated content. May be especially valuable to someone brand-new to the idea that her mother has narcissistic tendencies.
Really great and helpful information and guidance, especially the last section.
Personally, I did not find the numerous examples and quotes from her clients helpful. While some examples are helpful for me, many of the quotes lacked the context or parts of the client's journey that I would have liked to know about. At best they helped me feel like others understood , but most of the time they were distracting.
That being said, I would recommend this book as there is a lot of good, helpful information and ideas for a healing journey.

While I knew most of the information in the first half of the book from therapy, it was still cathartic to read. The exercises provided in the book are also really helpful, so far. I am sure I will go back and re-read some sections. Some parts really resonated with me. For instance, Dr. McBride says to grieve the parent you never had. That makes so much sense. But they chapters that I liked the best were ones on how to break the abuse cycle and raise your own children without hurtful narcissistic tendencies.
cried a lot while reading this book, but it was very much a necessary read!
