Great sequel to the first one. I really love the cast versions. Great story, On to the third one in a flash...

The audiodrama was superb, the production values quite high. Entertaining Aliens fiction. Not a fan of the fanfiction-ish callbacks to the movies, however. Still, quite fun, doesn't overstay its welcome.

The second - although I read/listened to it third - in a new(ish) series of Canonical Alien stories, this one is set even further in the future than the previous entry ([b:Alien: River of Pain|21432866|Alien River of Pain (Canonical Alien trilogy, #3)|Christopher Golden|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1414349873l/21432866._SY75_.jpg|40743421]) and follows a descendant of Ellen Ripley, Alan Decker, who is an empath and who is forced to join a team of mercenaries investigating a dig on the planet known as New Galveston: a dig that has unearthed something that is probably better left forgotten …

Yep, Weyland-Yutanio is at it again, sending in a team of unprepared and ill-advised soldiers (or, here, mercenaries) in an attempt to gather a 'specimen' alive: a team that, of course - with a few exceptions - finds itself completely outclassed by the Xenomorph, who are here shown to hold a particularly impressive millennial-old grudge against 'The Destroyer', one Ellen Ripley (or her descendants).

Great idea making Decker a descendant of Ripley, I couldn't help but feel more attached to his character because of this

Definitely a step down from from the previous book, Out of the Shadows. It buckles under the weight of a tired Alien formula that dares to stray from that path, while very slightly attempting something different involving our main character, Decker, who's an empath who can feel emotions. Including those of the Xenomorph's. Who apparently want him dead specifically because of his relation to Ellen Ripley. To me, I personally didn't like this much. It felt like some Jaws: The Revenge type of bad with the Xenomorph's desperate for revenge. Like how could they know? It's a bit of a reach for a compelling story and for it to make sense.

However I enjoyed the tie ins to the movie Aliens in bits and pieces for die hard fans to notice and pick up. And once the Xenomorph's actually make their presence felt in a fun location, after a very slow first half, it's a lot of fun. The characters are very hit and miss though.

I was close to rating this lower due to me not really vibing with it as much as I'd hoped. But as an Alien fan I slowly came around to it and by the end it left me intrigued for more. Despite how very familiar it feels in so many ways, which weighs it down for me.

Exceptional production and a great cast lead a so-so filler story. Still fun though.

A really interesting addition that nicely balances more of the same with different. It nicely utilises the well-established formula of a good Alien story but also adds enough differences to give this book its own flavour.
The main character was a likable reluctant hero and the action was well paced and exciting.
It doesn't really have anything to do with book 1 of this trilogy so I'm guessing these book are more of a 'forget everything else you know' books set around what's established in the Alien and Aliens films.

Listen, involving telepathic abilities into the Alien franchise is just a touch too much for me. Audiobook dramatisation is still an excellent idea.
