i DID take a picture of one of the cover artworks in this book and caption it “WOAW”, so as per usual the artwork is staying beautiful, but that’s nothing new.

As i’ve stated before, I don’t really care about the main romance plot of this book (or the main male protag in general, to be honest) so the first 2 issues in this volume werent really my bag, even though there’s nothing inherently wrong with where that storyline is and is going. Someone said this felt anticlimactic and yeah, i couldn’t agree more.

(SPOILERS AHEAD IN BRACKETS: I don’t think this writing is doing the character of snow justice at all, she became a romantic interest and immediately became unimportant and flat. i’m not on board)

The third issue was slightly more enjoyable because everyone loves a cool solo secret mission, and Bigby is the obvious first choice for one of those stories. He’s big and tough and even though that’s really his only personality, it lends to him being GOOD at being big and tough, so his missions are cool and i enjoyed this one. possible problematic discussions of israel i believe ? it gave me a weird vibe and i didn’t appreciate it, but other reviews with better information have touched on this better than i would be able to.

The final issue was by FAR the best one, another cool solo secret mission but this time it’s with Cinderella? consider me more interested, she was fun to read about (as per usual) and i hope i get to see more of her and her missions in the future. didn’t really need to see her naked unnecessarily - even if “you didn’t see anything” ... why was that part included? - but now i’m just thinking of things to critique since i’m sad that this series seems to be letting me down more and more lately, so i won’t rant.

The main story of this one was AMAZING. A lot of things came to a climax and conclusion more quickly than I was expecting. A lot of great art in this volume as well. Cinderella's story wasn't nearly as captivating, and the script at the end instead of another comic was a bit of a let down. This definitely wrapped up a lot of loose threads though, so I'm curious to see where the series is headed next.

Probably my favorite one so far, because I am so in love with Bigby and Snow.

On we go! Continuing on with the main story of Fables, we have Mowgli trying to find Bigby, Cinderella negotiating with the giants that live in the skies (all of them), and finally a happy reunion.

Really, it makes sense in context.

It's a crazy story, a quick read, and a lot of fun. I really like seeing how the characters grow and change and the underdog story of a whole pile of powerful immortal supernatural beings... (It's crazy when you say it that way).

Plus, you get the awesome(ly silly) way they stylize Russian:

Fables-8-1-Russian

They did the same with Arabic back in [b:Fables, Vol. 7: Arabian Nights|21327|Fables, Vol. 7 Arabian Nights (and Days)|Bill Willingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327962799l/21327._SX50_.jpg|2542586], but it was a bit less obvious. A fun way to do it.

Spoilers:

Fables-8-2-Mowgli

Mowgli is kind of an awesome badass, even if he doesn't have much in the way of character beyond... badassness.

Fables-8-3-Cinderella

Up in the clouds, it turns out Bigby's afraid of heights, so of couse SECRET AGENT CINDERELLA has to mess with him.

Fables-8-4-Relationships

I do enjoy that relationship. And hey, little Ghosty seventh child reveals secrets. :)

I love the story of Bigby and Snow. I want so much more of the cubs all the time! Also, I can't wait for an issue focused on Fly.

My favorite volume so far.

Mowgli continues his search for Bigby through Russia and the wilderness. Meanwhile, Snow White tries to raise the cubs at the Farm.

Mowgli finds Bigby and convinces him to come back to Fabletown for one last mission. Cinderella has negotiated a treaty with the Cloud Kingdom, so Bigby is able to climb a beanstalk, travel through the clouds, and land right in the Adversary's Empire. He burns down the Sacred Grove, and in thanks Fabletown gives him a valley where he and Snow can live together with their shape-changing cubs. He and Snow reunite and get married.
It's all very saccharine...none of it had any tension or stress. Even Bigby's mission to destroy the Adversary's greatest resource felt lackluster.

4.5

Beautiful art, interesting takes on classic fairy tale characters and a plot that drew me in from the start. Will need to re-read this one of these days!
