The Turnip Princess and Other Newly Discovered Fairy Tales

I wanted to enjoy this collection far more than I did; the average review is more a reflection of the impressive scholarly undertaking represented by its publication, rather than my enjoyment as a reader. Many of the tales were clunky either in translation or in their original form. For the sake of preservation it's understandable to alter their telling as little as possible, though it made for an oftentimes tedious read. I would highly recommend this collection for enthusiasts and ravenous consumers of all things folklore and fairy tale, but a more casual admirer might struggle to stay captivated.
This book gives a great insight into the priorities and focus of the people from the Bavarian region and their unsung history. If nothing else, the book is worth it for The Magic Quill, probably my new favourite fairy tale!
There is some repetition, and because these are folktales jotted down as various unprofessional storytellers recounted them, many lack a point, or clean structure, which makes the collection quirky, whimsical, and often downright bizarre. It's perfect for picking up and putting down between other reading, so they don't melt together into a muddle of people named Hans and perplexingly intimate relationships with nature.
What is perhaps most fascinating is that the gender roles and heroes of these tales are much more diverse than the contemporary Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. There is also a distinct lack of deed = reward that we expect from more modern fairy tales. These ones instead often reward laziness, the ability to irritate, or random acts of fate. However, there are certainly great wealths of inspiration for modern retellings, and I hope that some writers take it upon them to blow off the dust of these forgotten fables and bring them back into the popular consciousness.

A wonderful collection of fairy tales. The stories are written as if spoken in oral tradition. As a result, many of the stories do not have colorful descriptions and have abrupt pacing. While the writing style is certainly different from traditional fairy tales, the stories utilize the strengths of oral storytelling to spin imaginative, unique, and memorable stories. As an avid consumer of fairy tales, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book's large range of stories, from "Prince Dung Beetle" to "Learning How to Steal."
An interesting collection of fairy and folk tales. Compiled long ago and recently rediscovered, it feels pretty exhaustive. There are all manner of stories here, featuring mermaids, royalty, talking animals, clever thieves, and outwitted devils. The tropes might feel familiar, like they're combinations of other stories you know—a sleeping princess here, a fiddling demon there—but a lot of the tales present unique, sometimes very strange, plotlines. I just wish the solutions to the conflicts were just as fun and clever as the protagonists' conundrums. Far too often a story got wrapped up in a nice little bow of a couple sentences, like, "And then a good fairy got them out of danger and they were happy." Wha? Oh, well. There's so many stories in this collection, that you really can't fault some of them for sudden endings, I guess.

I am so glad I heard about this collection of newly discovered fairy tales! They were so much fun to read! They haven't been embellished or edited, so they are almost word for word how mothers would recite them to their children. Because of this, they are somewhat random, but this only adds to the charm.
I loved how short they were - just about 1 to 3 pages a piece. This meant that I could read one or two tales when I had just a couple of minutes here and there.
In some of the tales you could see similarities to the fairy tales we are all familiar with, like Cinderella, Rapunzel, etc. But they were just different enough to make them interesting.
I plan on purchasing a copy of this collection and perusing it from time to time. They made me laugh!
