This story is masterfully told entirely from the perspective of a young child. The writer captures the inner voice of a child incredibly well, while the world of the adults in the narrator's life is the focus of the story. It's a short, captivating read.

I don’t remeber being eight, seven or six. But seeing my little sister grow up lightened a curiosity in me about this enigmatic age. Claudia spends most of the story afraid; of her potencial ugliness, of her mother’s stories, of her dad’s possible monstrosity.

I don’t think trauma is something that comes up much in stories with child protagonists but being completly dependent on the emotional inteligence of people who (more often than not) don’t have it is, in itself, a horror movie. Claudia is not going to be given the opportunity to rebuild herself so easily or so soon, if at all. She’ll never be able to quite leave her parents’s apartment, her mother’s plants or the abyss…
