It takes some time to get used to Miriam Toews rhythm, to not stumble over the cadence of her unorthodox structures, but the stories are always worth the struggle, beautiful and sad, uplifting, too.

I liked the second half of this book better than the first.
I like it when books have voltas.
I like Miriam Toews. I am going to read more of her. Maybe even soon.

This is one of many books I've read by Toews and it does not disappoint. I love that it is a different take on a bildungsroman, with the adult main character learning about the real world as she distances herself from her father and his restrictive traditional lifestyle. It is a heart-breaking story with loveable characters and moments that made me laugh out loud. Minus one star because the ending was not very satisfying in my opinion.
