DID NOT FINISH: 18%

I'm very anti-book banning, but anyone caught praising this book should be stoned to death or something. I'm beyond mortified. Started this trash for a book club and I intended to at least finish it so I can clown on it with everyone else, cause it was terrible from the very first page, but I just had to DNF when he full on rapes a random woman and it's played off as a joke because "haha she's crazy." The red flag book to end all red flag books. Actual lunacy that any gross white man can write a book and it'll be considered an American classic, but I think that's just indicative of how vile that whole country is. I think the point it's trying to make, if any, is something-something-work-sucks, but all he does is rape women and drink about it, so it's not exactly some great revolutionary working class novel. Easily the worst book I've ever laid eyes on, and I will be fight-fighting my local book club host for bringing it to my attention.

perverted, problematic, & very funny. most importantly it makes me feel better about working my own depressing job

The writing was good but god do I feel icky

It had some nice moments but they seemed to have sprung up despite Bukowski, not because of him. Delicious Tacos does his whole shtick much better.

Second read: I think I was able to appreciate it more as a low brow comedy, but still can't get over how utterly unlikable Bukowski is. He tries so hard so seem like he's the most "real" man around but he's just as much a phony as the people he's criticizing. Cynicism is not a good substitute for sincerity.
funny lighthearted fast-paced
