Puzzling. It's caothic and funny, and at some points depressing, but it reflects life in the simplest way. Still, I am not quite sure exactly what to make of this book. I think Bukowski's writing, is one you have to be aware and prepared for before you start flipping the pages of your first Bukowski work. I liked this book. Quirky and different. Hm.
4/5*

Glad to meet Mr. Bukowski again and again it was one hell of a meeting.
I actually imagined myself in a really dark and gloomy bar sitting across Henry Chinaski (the main character and Bukowski's alter ego) with a yellow electric light over our heads while we drank some kind of alcoholic beverage, he smoked his cigarretes and told me the story of his years when he worked in the Post Office services.
This character is the typical loser that is constantly drunk and hungover, gambles and can't see a nice woman without thinking SEX. Everything about his life seems absolutely miserable and yet he just rolls with it. In between all of the misery of life, exploit at work, and wrecked "love" this man is able to keep his nerves and find a way to pull it through mostly by thinking "I don't care!". Maybe I should start thinking more like that!
Some episodes were really heavy and aggressive whereas some of them were comic and hilarious. The way this is written really pulled me into Bukowski's universe and made me feel like we were two losers at a bar having a melancholic and nostalgic conversation about life.
I enjoyed this novel more than my previous experience with Bukowski (Hot Water Music) because this had a much clearer narrative and some of the stories weren't so aggressive. Some of them were just sad and absolutely tragic. This was very entertaining.
Definetly Bukowski is a one-of-a-kind author.
