Great concept. Decent delivery.
This was REALLY hard to get into. Had I not purchased the audio book I don't think I would have finished it.
The spill is a really interesting idea and I think she just missed the mark a bit building up to it. In our Kardashian / Instagram culture this book is timely and on the nose. I think the internet may have built my expectations up too high. Towards the end I was really enjoying it but that was after slogging through 8 hours.

Maybe I’ll write a full review, maybe I won’t. But I need to note that this book was sometimes a struggle because of the antagonistic protagonists. Orla and Floss. Marlow, her coming of age after decades of being a victim of her parentage, really saves this book. It closes strong because the close is emotionally satisfying to the reader after chapters of being frustrated with Orla’s inner voice. After so much dysfunction. So much harmful toxicity and brokenness. And injustice. You are left with some sliver of peace. I must note that the commentary on social media, the dash of politics, the satire on privacy was some of the very best corners of this book. I think it’s worth the read. I’d check out this author again. They have a knack for world building.
*I received this book from Harper Collins Canada in exchange for an honest review*
As someone who has a marketing and social media background, I was very excited to read this. This book analyzes the complex world of social media and puts a unique spin on it. You have 2 characters, both set in different time periods who experience the ups and downs of social. You have Marlow who is living in a futuristic world full of influencers and obsession and then you have Orla who lives in the modern world and works for a BuzzFeed like celebrity publication. I really related to both of the characters in this story. I won't give too much away, but what goes on through this story will have you entangled with wonder and thinking about what could actually happen if life was like this. A part of me thinks that some of the events in this book could actually come to life. It definitely showcases a lot of prominent themes such as obsession, ignorance, desire to be seen and desire to disconnect. I think we all would like to disconnect from our connected worlds sometimes, however, what are the consequences if we do?
I definitely want to read whatever Megan Angelo writes next, I guarantee it will have the same spice as this story, maybe even more.

Kind of an underwhelming ending in my opinion but a very fun read throughout. Felt like I was reading an episode of Black Mirror which is a show I like.
Another crossover book that thoughtful older teens will definitely appreciate. The two timelines worked together brilliantly to point out the most ludicrous aspects of current celebrity and sharing culture and the extremes it can all lead to in a few decades (or sooner). It was a perfect blend of satire and warning--both hilarious and terrifying. Well written, thoughtful, funny, scary, and hopeful all at the same time.

This book made me want to delete my whole phone. Ironic that I’m putting this review on social media but oh well.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about this one. I just kept reading without realizing I was thinking and by the time I realized I was thinking I was almost done reading.
You kinda figure out the ending about halfway through but the journey to get there is wild. I will fully admit to being a hater and already not buying into the whole “influencer” vibe/aesthetic/whatnot but after this book, yikes.
I think the best way to summarize this book without giving anything away is to tell you that it opens with a quote from Nietzsche and then another from Kylie Jenner…
This isn’t one I’d recommend to anyone and everyone but I know there’s someone else out there who’d enjoy it.

I love this genre, which I’m calling “alternate near future.” This story had two protagonists, one for each timeline. The earlier protagonist, Orla, was born in 1986 and later one, Marlow, in 2016 (I spent way too long trying to figure out Orla’s birth year and then they just say it in the second half of the book). Both timelines are stories of social media out of control, and both show different ways that people believe that they are, in fact, in control of the social media. It’s also a story of people’s bad choices and in that way it was hard for me to handle. There’s not much real love or caring or friendship and the story seems to substitute mother-love for friend love and I’m not here for that.
