What's not to like? I won't get into the story itself, it can be read elsewhere, but come on!! The descriptions, the plotlines, the characters, the riddles, everything. This has to be The Masterpiece of Dean Koontz's career thus far. This is a perfect story, almost as perfect as they come, it even outdoes my faves such as 'Whispers', 'Intensity', 'Sole Survivor' and 'From the Corner of His Eye'. To those of you who didn't even get through half of the book: Give it another chance!! This is perfection.
What's not to understand? True, the lead character, Ethan Truman, gets killed off in chapter two and is back in chapter three, but if you guys'n'gals just hang in there, by the end it will make perfectly sense, and if you don't get touched and aren't filled with hope and joy when the last page is turned, then I dare say that your heart is made of stone. And yes, there is a large cast, but not as large as in, say, 'Strangers' or 'From the Corner of His Eye'.

This is a darn good novel; it has everything, love, horror, terror, hope, redemption...and in spite of the 600+ pages it is a fast read, immensely gripping, and not easily forgotten (but I'm also one of those guys who found that 'Mulholland Drive' has lots of meaning, and who never have found a movie going by so quickly).
Highly, highly, highly recommended.

It had an interesting start but dragged on way too much. I kept checking how far along I was in the book to just sigh and put it down for weeks.

Some of the beginning and the climax was good, but the rest was condescending and cringe-worthy. Very "old man yells at cloud" stuff. The dude has no idea what anarchism actually is and constantly raves about how plastic and corrupt society is, and the ending read like a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie(which is my guilty pleasure, but did not work here). Also, this book would not pass the bechdel test by any means. There's only two significant female characters in the entire novel, and one is defined solely by her feelings for the protagonist while the other is solely defined by her meekness and beauty. Definitely wouldn't recommend.

I gave up after the Rosemary’s Baby reference. No stars for you this time, Mr Koontz. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

It's been a while since I've read a Koontz book. This is my 11th I believe, and it's definitely a Koontz book. I like Koontz books. I'm not sure this is a classic but it is a fine novel filled with interesting characters, compelling moments, and frustrating speed bumps. I didn't know what kind of book it was until about halfway through. Once I did know what kind of a book it was the major action still didn't start until the last 1/10th of the book. I liked it?

When I first read this in 2020 it was a 4 star read and I've been meaning to reread it for along while. Unfortunately it wasn't as exciting the second time around but still an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars

I really do enjoy reading some Dean Koontz from time to time, while this isn't a favorite of mine it got everything I want from his novels, compelling and some insane characters, a good plot, edge of your seat action and the complete and utter need to find out what happens. My only complaint is that I wasn't in love with the ending.

I really enjoyed this book. I think one of Koontz's strengths is writing children's thoughts and feelings and making them real for his audience on paper. This book got me back reading Dean Koontz after a long hiatus.

Koontz has always written well when it comes to murders or serial killers. He really pegs how obessessd they can be. A must read.

This book is amazing! It kind of starts out slow but, as it continues, there are twists and turns. You keep wanting to scream, "tell him! Tell him!"

I think I might have liked this better not in audiobook. Though I've listened to this narrator do other books I've loved, I think perhaps this style of book didn't do well by me? Hard to follow.
