I have mixed feelings on this. The more I read of Dean Koontz, the more I see all of his books are the same. This had so much in common with The Darkest Evening of the Year I couldn't believe it. This had some interesting portions and it was entertaining, but it honestly could've been about 400 pages shorter! I wouldn't recommend the Audiobook...over 18 hours! Craziness!

Also: I found it very frustrating that you don't actually understand what the title really means until right around the last page!

Some of the beginning and the climax was good, but the rest was condescending and cringe-worthy. Very "old man yells at cloud" stuff. The dude has no idea what anarchism actually is and constantly raves about how plastic and corrupt society is, and the ending read like a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie(which is my guilty pleasure, but did not work here). Also, this book would not pass the bechdel test by any means. There's only two significant female characters in the entire novel, and one is defined solely by her feelings for the protagonist while the other is solely defined by her meekness and beauty. Definitely wouldn't recommend.

It was good. a page turner especially at the end. My only complaint is that in Koontz fashion, it's just too long. Soooo much detail. I found myself skimming a lot from the middle of the book on.

Started out well, with a lot of suspense and an interesting premise, but I think Koontz tipped his hand a little too early. The major players were revealed halfway through and as it turns out there wasn't really much to figure out after that, so the rest of the book was boring.

Koontz did a good job in the first half of this book of confusing the heck out of the reader. I think he did a great job of sketching the characters of Fric and Hazzard Yancy. I especially enjoyed the juvenile, yet precocious, 10 year old Fric. The plot was interesting, though once the guardian angel angle was revealed, it lost most of its suspense for me. I did like the otherworldly twist at the end because I wasn't expecting it, though it was kinda weird.
