Unputdownable. Halfway into this book I discovered that Vertosick spent his neurosurgical career in my city. The stories in this book are interesting and sometimes hopeful and sometimes sad, and the peek behind the scenes of how medicine operates bureaucratically is fascinating as well. I love this kind of book and I'm happy I happened upon this one.

I didn’t know what to expect when starting this book and I must admit I’m pleasantly surprised. I have a keen interest in surgery and find emergency room stories very intriguing and surgical emergencies terrifying. I was expecting to find out some grisly brain surgery facts and to feel a little creeped out by it all, but the passion and the craft displayed in the profession really shone out of this.

I’ve never read a non-fiction book which has gripped me from the first page, made me think of the wonders of modern science and move me to tears all in one read, but this one has done it for me.

Wow. I see why this book receives such great reviews. Somehow the author makes talking about neurosurgery an easy and enjoyable read that’s also profoundly reflective. Wonderful.

It is a very good book that I believe everyone should read to get a glimpse of the life of anyone in the medical field. It has some language, and it is very shockingly real. Some of it will shake you, but it is overall a really insightful and engaging book.

This book was so interesting. Reading medical books reminds you of how fragile life is, and how sometimes it may all just come down to one surgeon.

The author gave an interesting look at what goes in operating rooms, along with what goes on inside our brains when something is wrong. It was fascinating, and I enjoyed learning so much about how residencies worked back in the day.
