Magic Lessons: A Prequel to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

This prequel DID NOT disappoint! I finally feel a full circle closure, to have read Maria Owens' origin story. The bloodline makes more sense as Hathorne was not the only sire. Hoffman's research into practical magic is what we have embraced as homeopathic medicine and aromatherapy, leaving me with deeper sadness over the atrocities of the real trials. Maria and her legacy of daughters and sons born with the gift, sometimes the curse, of magic creates a heroine for the ages.

I enjoyed this book. I found the middle bit to be a slog. I was so frustrated with the characters but ultimately I did appreciate the ending and what it took to get there.

This is one of those books that is beautifully simple. I had wanted to read it since I was a fan of the Practical Magic film. This book has a simple storyline heavily influenced by early American history. It is well-written and has beauty and elegance in its style. I loved the inclusion of herbal remedies from the different areas visited. I also loved the additions of little fun facts of historical peoples and events especially the information about Captain Kidd and his relationship to Trinity Church which I admit I looked up to verify and find out more. It didn't have any sense of urgency or tension in the climax scenes. I just enjoyed reading it but it didn't thrill me or evoke any special senses.
