Weird choice to have a framing device that makes it seem like it’s a nonfiction recollection about the authors parents!

Particularly when his father is actually an American born neocon and former chair of Goldman Sachs!

Truly one of the best books I’ve read this year. A coming of age story of Lev, a teenager living in German occupied Leningrad who is arrested for stealing items from a dead pilot. Kolya is arrested for desertion from the Russian Army , which he vehemently denies. The duo is given the opportunity to avoid death sentences if they are able to secure twelve eggs for the colonel’s (?) daughter’s wedding. Thus begins a story that takes place over a few days. Some of the scenes are heartbreaking, others are gruesome, but there are lots of times I laughed out loud. A seemingly short book filled with a powerful story of friendship, love, grief, heartbreak…and eggs…a dozen eggs.

It astounds me that a book whose characters lie so close to death can be so full of life. Witty, brilliant, devastating, and above all, so beautifully human. I really think this book is a masterpiece.
