Keeping up with my rhytm of reading at least one Agatha a month, I read this one. It's second Poirot appearance with Hastings and it keeps giving you what it promises. An unsolvable mystery with a surprising ending. I guessed a few things, based on what she had done in books I've previously read from her, but she did surprise me!
I love how Poirot sucumbs to the rivalry with Giraud, and how Hastings is the hopeless romantic. And how Christie twists what we never thought possible.

Poirot and the brave and loyal, but perennially clueless, Captain Hastings travel to France at the behest of a mysterious millionaire who turns up dead before he can explain why he wrote so urgently to Poirot.
This is Poirot's second appearance in a Christie novel, but he has already developed a disdain for the forensic methods he espoused in his first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Indeed, Poirot derides the French detective who examines every inch of the crime scene for hair and other clues as a "human bloodhound."
This story had me grasping at red herrings until the end, and we learn something important about Hastings in the process! Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this one! I can fairly say that the ending surprised me, since there are a lot of plot twists in this story.
Even though I like Hastings, I think he wasn't the best sidekick in this book, Poirot deserved better.
