This book had me with the beautiful writing and descriptions of life in historical Australia. It lost me with the soapy narrative (even by family saga standards), the romanticized grooming of a child by a trusted priest, and the way that event was used as a weird segue into the intended “message” of the story.

I would go so far as to say that this is the Australian Gone with the Wind. An epic family saga with forbidden love, heartbreak and loss set against the backdrop of the barren Australian outback. Well worth a read.

This was a good epic read that spanned several generations. The author moved thru the years pretty fast. I found the characters a bit frustrating but overall I liked it.
