Very different book than what I normally read, but it was very good. Only 4 stars because you know what the ending is.
I labelled this book as a favorite back when I first read it in 2001. I'm working on re-reading all my favorites to see how they hold up over time. And after re-reading this, all I can wonder is what in the world was I thinking?
Obviously it was a lot better reading it when I didn't know what was going to happen. It is kind of a mystery novel. But I wonder why I liked it. Why did I think the ending was so good? I hated the ending this time. Hated it! And the middle was so bogged down and boring.
None of it was very believable. Nothing makes sense. None of the characters were consistent, and I didn't like any of them. And then the "twist" ending, which I think is Jodi Picoult's thing. The problem is her twists are always taking the easy way out. She doesn't have to actually solve anything or end her books in a satisfying way. She just throws what she thinks is a big twist in there to distract her readers so they don't realize what an actual pile of crap it is.
The only reason I'm giving this two stars instead of one is because at one time I did consider it a five star read, so I'm balancing it out a little. I won't be reading anything else by this author, and I'm angry at myself 13 years ago for actually thinking this was not just good, but great.

This book was completely captivating and exciting until the ending. It left me confused and dazed. Oates is an amazing writer however and her storytelling is impressive.
