This one made me mad at the father, rather than the mother. However, I realize that I know nothing about Amish culture, so he could very well have been within the bounds of Amish expectations. Still made me mad. But I finished this one, which is more than I can say for some other Picoult books that made me mad.

Again, Picoult takes a subject I don't know and uses the book as a tiny education. I'm not saying I'm an expert now. But I do have a minor appreciation for the Amish ways now. Sort of. I'm too "English" to really get it. But I sort of do.

I really liked the play between the family members, the lawyer, the brother. I don't know that I've seen it done that well in other Picoult books. She had more interaction between more characters in this than in many of her books that I've read. Ok, with the court and all, there were flat more characters. But she doesn't overwhelm you with them.

One thing I wonder - if I read this again, would I have seen the ending coming? Were there clues I missed, or is it truly out of the blue? Back to the library to find out, I suppose!

I’ve been really down on JP books the last few years, but this one was solid. I don’t know anything about the Amish community so I don’t know how realistic it is. The ending was not surprising to me compared to other JP final twists.

An intriguing read, a real page turner. I found myself totally immersed in the mystery. The Amish culture was described with dignity. A gripping read, and full of surprises.

Sadly, I didn’t enjoy this one. The characters were very earnest but very flat - on their own and in the ways they interacted with each other. This caught my eye after I read Women Talking by Miriam Toews (which is based on a true story about a Mennonite community) but after having read Toews’ book, this one felt terribly shallow. It was suspenseful because I wanted to see how the characters worked their way out of their ridiculous choices…but it wasn’t good :(

Another fabulous Jodi piccoult book! You can't go wrong with her books!

I love Jodi Picoult.

Good story. I'm facinated with the Amish, so that made it an interesting read. The plot seemed contrived at times, but overall, I couldn't put it down for the time I was reading it!
