I don't know how Jodi Picoult stuffs so much into her books! This one was no exception: a million twists and turns before we got to the end. I grew up in Pennsylvania, so I didn't have a lot of patience for the "no way, this is how the Amish live?!" parts and I don't really like books that shove a lot in for the sake of it, but at the end of the day I did care about the characters, so there's that.

This book made you really think about the gray area between "good" and "bad" or what is considered our own personal truth. I really enjoyed they way Picoult brought each individuals perspectives into this not so easy case. I highly recommend it!

Such a good book. A who-done-it with the added intrigue of the main lawyer in the case living among the Amish until she figures out what’s going on. Great read till the last page.
Moderate: Child death
This was my first Jodi Picoult book. I had picked it up from a street book booth but I had no clue I would be so glued to this. I had always thought she only wrote Romance novels.
Well this was everything but a Romance Novel.
Ellie is a tough Lawyer, who is ok with defending Mobsters, Killers etc who she knew where guilty but she still tries everything to get them acquitted. And she usually wins.
Now, through a family situation and fate or a simple coincidence, she agrees to defend Katie, an Amish Girl, charged with murdering her own newborn baby. Yet Katie can’t seem to remember anything.
So in order to get her out on bail, Ellie has to agree to live on the farm of Katie’s Amish parents and is not allowed to go anywhere without Katie.
It was my first book taking place in the Amish world and it took me in completely. The story is sweet, sad, surprising and absolutely captivating.
The writing is brilliant and it will definitely not be my last Jodi Picoult book.
And wow, what an ending...! So yes, definitely deserves 4 stars!

I wanted to love this book and at times I did. A young baby's body is found in the barn of an Amish farm. A 17 year old girl, Katie, is accused of killing her own baby, shortly after delivery. A big city lawyer, Ellie, is asked by her aunt to defend Katie. The family have to get permission from the Amish church because normally they don't take part in the 'English' legal system. I really liked Jodi Picoult's writing about life as an Amish family. The characters were well written too. The element that made me not love the book as much as I wanted to was that there were too many 'surprises' (many of which I saw coming, and many of which were simple misunderstandings by one character of another). Overall, I learnt about Amish culture and I always like it when I learn something when reading.
A true page-turner until the very end and highly informative about the Amish way of life. Would definitely recommend!
