this went exactly the direction I was hoping, while still surprising me.
This author needs to go to therapy. With how visceral the animal abuse was and making those who didn’t deserve wrath whilst letting the individual who gave the main character off scott free is mind boggling

I almost DNF’d because it moves at a snail’s pace and the narrator’s voice isn’t particularly interesting. I was a third of the way through, lost in children’s names, wondering when the story was going to start. It’s uncommon that I rate a novel with that kind of pacing so highly — that aspect could be improved —but the payoff is well worth it.
This is the feminist horror that I was hoping for when I picked up (and was thoroughly disappointed by) Such Sharp Teeth last year. Subtle, intelligent. Without the pretense. Without trying so hard to be cool and bloody. What a first novel for Elliot Gish!
