Felt less 'female rage/feminist' and more 'woman losing her mind', though a fantastic genre in its own right. the ending felt like it was meant to be a "good for her" but all i got was "...aw okay i guess?" it fell somewhat flat.
equating empowerment/freedom with animalistic cruelty that is then seemingly directed at not the oppressing force (which she tries to rebel against throughout the entire novel) but her only *friend* is also...interesting. Bury your gays?
Main thing: I did enjoy the writing + i love a good (albeit sloooow) spiral into madness. Definitely more folk than horror.

Really liked this one!
The characters felt genuine for the time period an well-developed, the atmosphere was just spooky enough that it didn't turn silly, the writing style was great very descriptive specially ith the gore stuff, the plot was a bit loose but this book is not for the plot, the intrigue was there all the way through and it made sense in the context of fantasy and horror.
Listened to it as an audiobook and really enjoyed the narrator.

An eery slow burn that felt like a grey fog crawling through the woods into a sleepy New England village. The writing held me from the first page, lyrical and yet totally approachable. The main character is one so many women can see themselves in - patted on the head and told she’s a good girl until the pats start to feel more like hits and she bites.

A stunning debut novel with a cathartic scream of an ending. I can’t wait to see what Elliott Gish delivers for us next.

10/10 recommend reading along to cathedral organ music for maximum religious trauma.
